MWABA Funds Concussion Testing
MWABA is currently funding baseline concussion testing for student athletes who compete in high impact sports such as football, soccer, wrestling, basketball, hockey, diving, pole vault, baseball and softball. West has worked with UW Sports Medicine to become the first high school in Madison to fully implement a concussion testing program.
ImPACT is a user-friendly computer-based testing program specifically designed for the management of sports-related concussions. The test records an athlete's health history, current symptoms and neuropsychological data.
The test evaluates the athlete's reaction time, concentration and memory with a series of questions, prior to head injury. Physicians can use the ImPACT test to compare the post concussion ImPACT results against pre-injury test results or normative data, which provides objective information to assist in developing a treatment plan and to ensure the athlete's safety.
Student athletes were tested during the 2009-2010 school year. The testing program continues this year.
